22 years ago when I opened, my primary goal was to offer really well built, top of line upholstery. Sofas, sectionals, chairs, sleepers. Over the last few years my focus has been geared more towards mattresses. But, during the last couple of years, I’ve had several customers wanting to replace their old sofa they purchased from me 15 to 22 years ago. Because it lasted so long! So, I’m bringing this top line of upholstery in again.
Eight-Way hand tied construction out of North Carolina. Beautiful fabrics, good looking frames (styles), and of course, extremely well built. Just looking at a picture relays the “Quality”.
Just had a shopper in, looking to see what is available in a full size wood bed. I showed a few styles and gave the necessary dimensions. No decision to buy yet. However, I asked the shopper if they already have a mattress set. To which they replied, “Yes, I just bought one at ...” (I won’t list the name here, but it was one of the Big ones.) I asked how much did you pay. “$799 and that included the boxspring.”
As the conversation continued, here is the rest of the story.
Get your calculator out:
$79 delivery fee
$159 mattress protector
$1037 total before tax...
W O W...!!!
This mattress was a 1-Sided mattress too.
Bottom line: Way overpriced.
At my store, this shopper could have purchased a 1-Sided full mattress set for $499-$699. And, a 5-Sided Tencel mattress protector for $59. Big Savings here.
But, get this. This shopper could have purchased my best seller:
A 2-Sided Tri-Zone Fabric Wrapped Pocketed Coil Innerspring Set @ $749 and the $59 mattress protector for a total of: $808 and no delivery fee.
W O W...!!!
Beware of this and use your common sense. There is a big market out there on returned mattresses. These mattresses have been slept on and then returned to the seller. A third party buys these mattresses and “cleans” them up, and then sells them to retailers that buy them so they can promote the 80% off name brand mattresses. Within the trade, these mattresses are known as, “Throwbacks”. Essentially, used mattresses. If you see such a sale, ask... “Are these mattresses throwbacks? Are they used? Have they ever been in someone’s home? Have they ever beenslept on?”
If you are in the market for an adjustable power bed, remember this:
No mattress conforms better to the contour of an adjustable power base than a solid Talalay latex mattress with a stretch knit cover.

Yes, indeed. All that know me, know I show up and work at the store 7 days a week; actually 359 days a year. And, if I don’t get my sleep I don’t function. One thing I do is, I take a shower every night before hitting the sack. It relaxes the body. And, I hit the sack as soon as I dry off. As my body cools down it helps induce sleep. I believe if you take a shower before going to bed, you will sleep better.
Futons continue to be very popular for those who take a good look at them. The key is to get a good frame and, most importantly, a good futon cushion (mattress).
Our best selling futon mattress is an innerspring design. Yes, a futon cushion with springs inside. Durable and long lasting and comfortable.
A good frame is made from solid wood; no metal deck.
Pick a cover and get your desired look and you can always change the look by changing the cover.
Excellent choice for rental properties too.
As many of you know, I am a BIG promoter of two sided mattresses; mattresses you can flip over since both sides are padded the same. All the heavily advertised brands are single sided. You can not flip over since only one side of the mattress is padded. This is done for a reason. First, the cost of making the mattress is reduced since only one sided is padded. Second, the mattress will wear out quicker.
Common sense: a two sided mattress will last longer. The big brands simply do not want mattresses to last as long as mattresses lasted 'Back In The Day". Do you see the big brands and big retailers promoting that you should replace your mattress every eight years? What's up with that?
Oh, and the so called 'mattress experts"? Many, when asked for a two sided mattress, will look you straight in the face and say, "Nobody makes two sided mattresses anymore. Our one sided mattresses are built so well, you never have to flip them."
Tell 'Em Flanagan has ten two sided mattress sets on the floor. And, they are all:
Built To Last... Not Built To Last Only Eight Years...
An important point to remember when shopping latex mattresses is the amount of latex in the mattress. Many retailers will list a mattress as "Latex" if the mattress only has 1" of latex on top of a foam core. A mattress like this is not what I would list as a latex mattress. Always ask, "How much latex is in this mattress."
